Charge Controllers
A charge controller sits between the solar array and the battery, regulating voltage so the battery is charged fully without being damaged. PWM controllers are simple and cost-effective for small arrays where panel voltage closely matches the battery. MPPT controllers convert surplus voltage into additional current and typically recover 10–30% more energy on cold or partially shaded days, which is why they are preferred for arrays above roughly 200W and for higher battery voltages.
